Bringing Building Data on Construction Site for Virtual Renovation Works
2013
Déjà sur HAL mais sans le fichier pdf; In this study we aimed at evaluating the benefit of managing a digital mock-up for renovation operations in an ancient building. Focusing on thermal efficiency, the renovation proposal dealt with the great windows. We compared three methodologies dedicated to the project planning and management We first address the issue of the renovation of old buildings and come up with a workflow that connects the digital building to its lifecycle; then we focus on an instance of onsite handling of such data, in an augmented reality context, by elaborating the notion of “BIM in situ” as described in the papers of [3] as well as in [4]. Results reveal that handling B…
Transforming Experience: The Potential of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality for Enhancing Personal and Clinical Change
2016
During life, many personal changes occur. These include changing house, school, work, and even friends and partners. However, the daily experience shows clearly that, in some situations, subjects are unable to change even if they want to. The recent advances in psychology and neuroscience are now providing a better view of personal change, the change affecting our assumptive world: (a) the focus of personal change is reducing the distance between self and reality (conflict); (b) this reduction is achieved through (1) an intense focus on the particular experience creating the conflict or (2) an internal or external reorganization of this experience; (c) personal change requires a progression…
Architectural Representation: a Tool for Urban Regeneration : the Colour Plan of Egadi Islands
2018
The Egadi Islands, at the western end of Sicily, preserve a peculiar architectural and environmental heritage. The work of people – related to tuna fishing, stone extraction and agriculture – has created, over time, an exceptional landscape. The nature, colour and texture of the local stone have given shape to a traditional architecture that, today, risks to disappear and to be replaced by new anonymous buildings. Furthermore, the pressure of tourism threatens to damage this delicate balance established, over centuries, between people and environment. Therefore, the Local Administration decided to adopt a Colour Plan to manage the inevitable processes of territorial transformations. The Arc…
Visually Perceived Distance Judgments: Tablet-Based Augmented Reality Versus the Real World
2016
Does visually perceived distance differ when objects are viewed in augmented reality (AR), as opposed to the real world? What are the differences? These questions are theoretically interesting, and the answers are important for the development of many tablet- and phone-based AR applications, including mobile AR navigation systems. This article presents a thorough literature review of distance judgment experimental protocols, and results from several areas of perceptual psychology. In addition to distance judgments of real and virtual objects, this section also discusses previous work in measuring the geometry of virtual picture space and considers how this work might be relevant to tablet A…
Developing hand-worn input and haptic support for real-world target finding
2019
Locating places in cities is typically facilitated by handheld mobile devices, which draw the visual attention of the user on the screen of the device instead of the surroundings. In this research, we aim at strengthening the connection between people and their surroundings through enabling mid-air gestural interaction with real-world landmarks and delivering information through audio to retain users' visual attention on the scene. Recent research on gesture-based and haptic techniques for such purposes has mainly considered handheld devices that eventually direct users' attention back to the devices. We contribute a hand-worn, mid-air gestural interaction design with directional vibrotacti…
A cultural heritage experience for visually impaired people
2020
Abstract In recent years, we have assisted to an impressive advance of computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Among the many applications of computer vision, in this paper we investigate on the potential impact for enhancing the cultural and physical accessibility of cultural heritage sites. By using a common smartphone as a mediation instrument with the environment, we demonstrate how convolutional networks can be trained for recognizing monuments in the surroundings of the users, thus enabling the possibility of accessing contents associated to the monument itself, or new forms of fruition for visually impaired people. Moreover, computer vision …
Ricostruire: documento/digitale/virtuale. Villa Deliella
2022
Digital experience for the enhancement of cultural heritage. VR and AR models of the Valentin im Viertel farmhouse.
2019
This study deals with development of the farmhouse Valentim im Viertel digital model used as a tool for the knowledge of the South Tyrol traditional architecture. The methodological approach shows the acquisition of data and the use of VR and AR models for the enhancement of the cultural heritage.
Mostrare l’invisibile: il soffitto trecentesco nascosto del convento di Santa Caterina a Palermo
2022
Digital surveying and representation technologies have been widely used for the visualization of works of art and architecture that no longer exist or have been moved from their original location. These researches share a common feature, that can be resumed by the motto “Display the invisible”, already used in research experiences [Colosi et al. 2015; Gambin et al. 2021]. The purpose of this research is the visualization of a 14th century wooden ceiling, painted by anonymous artists, that covered the hall used for the assembly of the Chapter in the convent of Santa Caterina, at the heart of the historic center of Palermo. The hall was reshaped at the end of the 18th century to serve as a sa…
AUGMENTED REALITY. PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE.
2013
The access to information is a right and a duty. An accessible website becomes a universal resource for all people who surf the net, it becomes a powerful tool to spread its message and its information with the conscious and the knowledge that the information will come to anyone who wants to access it. The innovative technologies of graphic communication (ICT) are the means to allow this cultural diffusion. In this paper the goal is to demonstrate that a conscious use of ICT allows the accessibility of the cultural heritage. The case study is on the prisons of the Inquisition in Palermo. A great opportunity has permitted to carry out a cultural, historical, architectural and social research…
